It may come as a surprise that this year over 32% of the United States population decided to veer away from unstable mortgages and opted to rent their home instead. This staggering number is higher than any trend seen in decades, and of course big business has spotted this drastic change in living and adjusted their products and solutions to cater to a new market of shopper. Energy efficiency is another huge topic for Americans so it only made sense to launch a new line of appliances and services designed for today’s thrifty investor. Here is the top ten energy saving tips for those living outside a locked in mortgage that do not wish to make major appliance purchases.

Light bulbs have transformed so drastically in the past decade that there is absolutely no reason to be wasting money while using outdated technology. The old fashioned light bulb that empowered America for over a century is no longer practical, and Energy Star compact fluorescent light bulbs use 75% less energy ($100 per year) while lasting six to ten times longer.

If you have one room that stays too hot in the summer, an Energy Star room air conditioner can reduce your monthly energy usage by ten percent or more. Since these normally install in existing windows it is essential to either remove them during the winter or heavily insulate them, and when purchasing you should search for a unit that is approximately the same size of the window that will support it.

If you have central air conditioning, installing a programmable thermostat is definitely a drastic money saver. The majority of energy is wasted while your air conditioning unit runs for long periods of time trying to keep up with the outdoor temperatures; this eliminates that issue and increases comfort within the home.

Likewise, for your home to be cooled as efficiently as possible air circulation is essential and no vent should ever be blocked by furniture or other household items. Since heating and cooling is one of the main energy expenses within your home, this can save exponentially.

Since electronic items can amount to 15% or more of our energy bills, it is important to keep them turned off when not in use and to plug them into a power strip that can be manually turned on and off as well. Almost all laundry washes just fine in cold water, and specific detergents are made for this exact task in mind. Water heating is also a top energy cost within homes so this minor change can pay off large dividends.

Likewise, keep your dryer as efficient as possible by keeping the lint trap clean, sorting clothing based on thickness, and not over-drying. Newer Energy Star models have automatic moisture sensors that will turn off dryers when clothing is ready, and this will save a small fortune in electricity costs.
